A 2-year-old girl, Chimamanda Olijo, who was allegedly raped and sodomised by an unknown person, is dead. The police has ordered that her body be deposited at the Enugu-Ezike General Hospital for autopsy, while investigations into the circumstances leading to her death continues. Olijo had been lying ill at an Aji private hospital, Igbo Eze North Local Government Area of Enugu State, following the injuries she sustained from the tragic incident. The hospital and police sources confirmed that she died last night after battling for life for about seven days.
Chimamanda, who was living with her grandmother at Okpo area of Aji at the time of the incident, was said to have been left with a neighbour, while her grandmother, identified as Madam Lauretta Idoko, went to a nearby market to buy some food items. On her return from the market, Lauretta discovered that she was unconscious and took her to a nearby hospital, where some nurses suspected malaria and recommended “MP and widal” tests. It was alleged that as the health of the girl was deteriorating, Lauretta took her grandchild to Divinity Hospital in the area. It was at the hospital that it was discovered that “the girl’s reproductive organs were not normal as her vagina had become very loose, while the anus was equally loose and bleeding.”
