The Department of State Security Service(DSS), yesterday, freed from detention, a former member of the Presidential Arms Investigation Panel, Muhammed Umar, who has been slammed into detention for about six months. No reason has been made public by the DSS for detaining Umar, who before his ordeal, was seen as a man-friday to the Presidency. Umar, a retired Air Commodore, was arrested by the SSS in June for alleged money laundering and illegal possession of firearms.

Although he approached the court and got bail in the sum of N100 million bond, the security agency declined to release him, giving no justification for the action, which did not go down well with the federal judge, Nnamdi Dimgba. However, when Umar’s case came up for the umpteenth time before Justice Dimgba last Thursday, he declined hearing the case until the DSS complied with his earlier verdict to release Umar on bail.

Umar was a member of the Arms Procurement Investigation Panel, which discovered how the $2.1 billion cash meant for the purchase of arms was diverted by contractors, politicians and cronies for selfish purposes, thereby giving a vent to insurgency. Although most of the suspects have been recommended for trial, not one has yet been jailed. But the trial has begun in many courts, whose judges are also facing corruption trials.
